Ever since PokerStars’ March launch came, The competing networks — the aforementioned WSOP-888 partnership and PartyPoker / Borgata — had braced for a hit to their traffic.

And while PokerStars enjoyed a big lead from Day 1, it had already experienced a dip in its traffic earlier this month. At the same time, PokerStars’ entrance has simply expanded the New Jersey online poker market, at least temporarily.

The latest numbers from New Jersey show that PokerStars’ lead over WSOP-888 is pretty small.

Data fromPoker Industry PRO (paywall) indicated that PokerStars’ traffic increased in the past week, and that it has 11% more cash-game traffic than WSOP-888.

WSOP-888 has an average of 130 players over the same period

That lead, while it has been consistent in the past week, appears tenuous. For example, on Friday night WSOP-888 cash traffic easily outpaced PokerStars.

The big loser in all of this appears to the PartyPoker-Borgata network.

It has trailed the other two sites by a big margin over the past month. As of Friday, it’s 7-day average for traffic was 80 players.

And with PokerStars and WSOP featuring promotional opportunities in the next month, it’s difficult to see how it can even tread water, let alone make in-roads on the other sites.

What’s in store for May?

May will be an interesting month to see where things stand for PokerStars and WSOP-888.

WSOP will be offering qualifiers for the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, which starts at the end of the month.

But PokerStars upped the ante by offering $1.1 million guaranteed over two weeks in its NJ Spring Championship of Online Poker. PokerStars appears likely to increase its lead once again on the strength of that big tournament series.
