Dania Casino & Jai Alai in Broward County, Florida will be closing Oct. 15 for renovations expected to last at least one year, leaving roughly 300 people out of a job. The property, formerly known as Dania Jai Alai, is hoping that a $50 million refurbishment will keep the racino competitive in the increasingly congested South Florida gambling market.
The casino, which offers slot machines and a 12-table poker room, has fallen behind nearby state parimutuel facilities Mardi Gras Casino and Gulfstream Park in terms of slot revenue and is miles behind the Seminole Hard Rock and Seminole Classic Casinos, which can offer a wider range of gaming options.
While Florida’s eight racinos average $176 in revenue per day from each machine, Dania Casino is only taking in $65.
The new property will employ between 500 and 600 people.
Dania Casino was formerly purchased by Boyd Gaming for $152 million in 2006 but was sold to a group of Argentinean investors for $65.5 million in June of 2013.
